Thursday June 6th 2024 marked the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied forces landed on the Normandy beaches in France in 1944 in the largest Naval, Air and Land operation in history – referred to as “Operation Overlord”. It marked the beginning of the end of World War 2.
A day of national events was planned from morning to evening and Rhossili Community Council co-ordinated a series of local events, working with Rhossili Village Hall, Gower National Trust, Knelston School and St Mary’s Church.

Involving pupils from Knelston School. Followed by the placing of poppies along the fence at Rhossili.
2.30-4.30 Afternoon tea
6.30pm Ringing of church bells at St Mary’s Rhossili
and other churches across Gower.
7pm: Commemorative Concert
7pm: Building the Beacon
9pm: At the going down of the sun
With the lighting of the beacon at 9pm, followed by the lighting of the Lamplight of Peace, the reading of the International Tribute by Cllr Ian Button, Chair of Rhossili Community Council at 9.15pm, and The Last Post, played by Mat Davies
